Thank You Chris

I so loved Ashton Kutcher's speech at the Teen Choice Awards.  I especially liked that he told millions of people his real first name.  It was perfect, short and to the point:

  1. Opportunity looks a lot like hard work.
  2. Being sexy is being smart, thoughtful and generous. Everything else is crap.
  3. Everything around us in life was made by people that were no smarter than us. Build a life, don't live one.
I appreciated his very simple message. Our kids are constantly inundated with messages that they should connect their self worth to things that aren't lasting - like their looks, clothes and how much money they have.
There are not enough media outlets/websites that encourage young people to develop their minds and personalities.  We promote and support television shows that feature people who have no discernible talent, save for marrying a rich guy or making a sex tape with the right B-list celebrity.  We hang on their every word, follow the ups and downs of their lives and eagerly anticipate what will happen next.

Not so long ago, TVs were referred to as "the idiot box".  It didn't make any sense to me when I was younger; I get it now.

At the same time, we as adults need to remember that too.  It's so easy to look at television lives, compare them to our own and feel that we've somehow fallen short.  It's a load of bullshit.

We always have to remember that we are enough.

We have to remember to teach our children that they are enough and not let the messages from the outside become louder than our own voices.

Ashton's message was good, but the truth is he's not saying anything we didn't already know.
